The Collect

St John Baptist’s Day

Almighty God, by whose providence thy servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour, by preaching of repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Our Heritage: The censuses for Campsea Ashe

Who has lived in Campsea Ashe?

The Census records tell us exactly who lived here and a lot more besides. The transcripts of the censuses from 1841 to 1911 for Campsea Ashe are now available to download free of charge. We hope they will prove useful to people researching the history and heritage of the village. Please note, the file has now been updated to contains transcript of the 1911 census, so if you downloaded an earlier version you may want to get hold of this version.

Download the census details here.

Please ask us for any information you want to know about the censuses and if we can provide the information we will do so - use the contact page to send us a message. If you want us to undertake research on your behalf do ask us and we will help if we can - a small donation to the Bells Project would be appreciated.

Did you know........?

During the period 1841 to 1911 the population of the village remained fairly stable - between 319 and 372 people.

There are only 9 family names that were ever-present in all the censuses:

Battle, Buckles, Knights, Ling, Mattin, May(es), Paternoster, Sawyer and Walker.

The oldest recorded person in all the censuses was William Last, an agricultural Labourer who was 93 in 1881 and he was living with his wife, Mary Ann (aged 86) and his daughter Harriet Knights (41).
